Ahoy, and summer officially begins next Friday!
Does anyone find it surprising that a sailboat carrying 80 to 90 bales of marijuana was beached in Newport Harbor after a brief chase by the Coast Guard? This occurred at 1 a.m. on June 3 after the drug smugglers entered the harbor and refused to allow the Coast Guard personnel to board the sailboat. Finally, the boat was run aground on Balboa Island, and two people leapt from the vessel only to disappear in the night.

LONG BEACH -- Boaters needing to refuel at Shoreline Marina can now once again use the Shoreline Marina fuel dock -- for the first time after several years of closure.
The fuel dock reopened Friday, May 24, just in time for Memorial Day weekend and the busy boating season.

LB Commission Recommends Slip Fee Increases

LONG BEACH -- Boat slip tenants in Long Beach marinas may get a rent hike, if the Long Beach City Council approves a Marine Advisory Commission recommendation to raise slip fees by .5 percent for boaters using older wooden docks and by 2.224 percent for boaters using concrete docks. The 2.224 percent increase corresponds to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Commissioners voted several times on five options provided by Marine Bureau manager Mark Sandoval during a May 9 meeting. The advisory group pondered how to ensure that the marina maintains adequate funding for future upgrades while not imposing too big of an increase on local boaters.
