When It Comes to Beachwater Quality, CA Ranks in the Bottom Third

KCET Out of the 30 U.S. states with ocean or lakefront beaches, California ranks 20th when it comes to water quality, found a study released today by the Natural Resources Defense Council. A five percent decrease from the previous year, there were 5,515 instances of beaches closing or experiencing advisories in California due to polluted waters, which represents a quarter of closures and advisory notices nationwide in 2012. LB Votes to Move Breakwater Study Forward

LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach City Council voted March 12 to spend $2.8 million and pay for the majority of a study of the Long Beach Breakwater, in an effort to advance the ongoing discussion of whether to reduce the harbor’s breakwater size. The Long Beach Breakwater Reconnaissance Study (formally titled the “East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Study”) was completed in July 2009. New Deep Water Oyster Farming in So Cal Waters?

[caption id="attachment_143" align="alignnone" width="150" caption="AP Photo"][/caption] Associated Press via KFWB   (AP) – A Southern California entrepreneur already has a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provision permit to harvest a million pounds of mussels and oysters from an underwater shellfish farm nearly five miles offshore. The project, described as a milestone in aquaculture, now needs California Coastal Commission approval. Open ocean cultivation, rather than shallow bays and estuaries, will produce higher growth rates, better meat yields and heavier production than shellfish farms close to shore, Philip Cruver said. “Our goal is to show this can be done and put a dent in the nation’s $10.4 billion seafood deficit,” said Cruver, 67.
