Fish dying off after massive molasses spill in Honolulu Harbor

By Matt Pearce - Los Angeles Times Fish are dying off en masse in the waters around Honolulu after hundreds of thousands of gallons of molasses spilled into Honolulu Harbor this week -- and there's nothing officials can do to clean it up.
Thousands of fish, suffocated by the sugary sludge, have been killed or threatened. Footage from local media showed fish floating in the harbor, with some seeming to gasp above the surface of the water, which was contaminated by the thick, syrupy sweetener. Continue Reading...

Chinese And U.S. Navies Exercise Together – China To Take Part in RIMPAC 2014

Ottawa Citizen: By David Pugliese Three China People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ships arrived in Hawaii last week to join the US Navy in a search-and-rescue exercise, according to Associated Press. The PLAN guided missile destroyer Qingdao, a frigate and a supply ship took part in exercises Monday with the USS Lake Erie off Waikiki in order to foster operational familiarity between the two navies, according to the report. Avalon: Catalina’s only city has a century of history

AVALON >> Catalina Island’s only city has a century’s worth of history since its incorporation, and although the town’s primary claim to fame may be its reputation as a playground for old Hollywood, those who have spent their lives here have their own stories to tell in addition to those told by the black-and-white photographs of movie stars that can be seen throughout the town. Avalon’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated city fell on June 26. Centennial celebrations took place earlier this summer, and the Catalina Island Museum is still preparing an exhibit on the island’s centennial that is scheduled to open in October. Beach radar scours sea for smugglers

UT San Diego: By David Garrick

CARLSBAD — A large radar device recently installed at Carlsbad’s Ponto Beach is part of a federal crackdown on drug and immigrant smuggling along the California coast.

The device, which can track any vessel within 20 miles, could help law enforcement agencies spot and apprehend smuggling boats or terrorists before they get to shore. It is the first of its kind in the country.

Federal officials have begun to focus more on securing the coastline after sharply reducing smuggling by air during the past 25 years, said Keith Jones of the Air and Marine Operations Center in Riverside, which is run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Tsunami would flood large swath of Southland coast, USGS says

Los Angeles Times: By Rong-Gong Lin II, Tony Barboza and Hector Becerra A large tsunami hitting California would cause major flooding in Long Beach and parts of Orange County and force 750,000 people to evacuate coastal areas in a few hours, according to extensive simulation published Wednesday by U.S. Geological Survey.
The study, released two years after a tsunami killed thousands in Japan, identified several communities that are particularly vulnerable to flooding because of their low elevation and lack of protection from waves. They include Marina del Rey, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as a swath of low-lying coastal areas between San Pedro and Newport Beach. Continue Reading...
