LONG BEACH -- Boat slip tenants in Long Beach marinas may get a rent hike, if the Long Beach City Council approves a Marine Advisory Commission recommendation to raise slip fees by .5 percent for boaters using older wooden docks and by 2.224 percent for boaters using concrete docks. The 2.224 percent increase corresponds to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Commissioners voted several times on five options provided by Marine Bureau manager Mark Sandoval during a May 9 meeting. The advisory group pondered how to ensure that the marina maintains adequate funding for future upgrades while not imposing too big of an increase on local boaters.

Still, the death of British Olympic champion Andrew “Bart” Simpson May 9 during a training session on San Francisco Bay gives fresh urgency to one question in the chase for the oldest trophy in international sports this summer.
How safe are the boats?

The Log
By: Ambrosia Brody
NEWPORT BEACH -- The Newport Beach Dock Owners Association -- a group of citizens and business owners behind the Stop the Dock Tax campaign, who filed a lawsuit against the city of Newport Beach on Feb. 12 -- withdrew its request for a temporary restraining order that was intended to prevent the city from collecting permit fees on private docks from tidelands users on April 24, officials report.

Ensenada Race Boat Grounding Reveals Nav Hazard
The Log
By: Ambrosia Brody
PUERTO SALINA, BAJA CALIFORNIA NORTE -- One sailboat participating in this year’s Newport-to-Ensenada Race was nearly destroyed when an attempt to cruise into a marina north of Ensenada resulted in a grounding at a shoal-filled and virtually landlocked facility. The incident revealed a serious but little-known navigation hazard for boaters along Northern Baja California’s Pacific Coast.
Puerto Salina marina tenants have reported that boat groundings are commonplace in this area, since dredging operations at the entrance channel have been stalled for almost half a year. And with no breakwater to surround the facility, vessels that run aground here often get caught in the surf break.

40th Newport Boat Show Coming April 18-21
The Log
NEWPORT BEACH -- A lot has happened since the very first Newport Boat Show opened at Lido Marina Village in 1973.
Back then, Richard Nixon was in the White House. A Middle East oil embargo had brought on a U.S. gasoline shortage and there were long lines at filling stations. “All in the Family” was the Number 1 television show in the country. And “The Sting,” with Robert Redford and Paul Newman, won the Academy Award for best motion picture.

LB Votes to Move Breakwater Study Forward
LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach City Council voted March 12 to spend $2.8 million and pay for the majority of a study of the Long Beach Breakwater, in an effort to advance the ongoing discussion of whether to reduce the harbor’s breakwater size.
The Long Beach Breakwater Reconnaissance Study (formally titled the “East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Study”) was completed in July 2009. The reconnaissance study is just one of the initial stages that could potentially lead to reconfiguring the breakwater or making other changes.

New Deep Water Oyster Farming in So Cal Waters?
[caption id="attachment_143" align="alignnone" width="150" caption="AP Photo"][/caption]
Associated Press via KFWB
(AP) – A Southern California entrepreneur already has a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provision permit to harvest a million pounds of mussels and oysters from an underwater shellfish farm nearly five miles offshore. The project, described as a milestone in aquaculture, now needs California Coastal Commission approval.
Open ocean cultivation, rather than shallow bays and estuaries, will produce higher growth rates, better meat yields and heavier production than shellfish farms close to shore, Philip Cruver said. “Our goal is to show this can be done and put a dent in the nation’s $10.4 billion seafood deficit,” said Cruver, 67.

The carousel is gone, along with the bumper cars and, most recently, the RocknBounce ride. But with hopes of bringing people, jobs and new life to the area, ExplorOcean has begun replacing some of those attractions and promises to add an element of education to the entertainment. A bungee ride called Ocean Motion has replaced RocknBounce, the iconic Ferris wheel is staying and a preview center has popped up in the middle of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.
