Hawaii Reporter Report from the Honolulu Transpacific Committee - It has been described as a life changing adventure, a whirlwind of unbelievable competition and a seafaring challenge unlike any other in the world.  This is Transpac.  In just under 1 month on July 8, 2013 there will be 59 skippers racing their boats towards Hawaii from Long Beach, along with novice, intermediate and professional crews. As of June 20, 2013 Transpac has received four entries from Hawaii-based boats, Pyewacket, Kahuna, Casch Mer and Grand Illusion. Of course, Hawaii’s very own James McDowell, skipper of Grand Illusion, was the winner in the last Honolulu Race (2011) of the King Kalakaua Trophy awarded to the First Corrected Overall yacht.  Hundreds of sailors from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, California, Mexico, Chicago, Japan, San Francisco, and now a late entry from Thailand, along with many other ports of call, will very soon head across the Pacific Ocean in this historic yacht race Continue Reading......

By Chris Borg - Surfline Mid last month, 05/15/2013, was Quince de Mayo, aka the first day of the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season.With impeccable timing, opening day ceremonies included the formation of the year's first Tropical Depression, as TD-1E developed about 800 miles SSE of Baja, Mexico. That lead-off low quickly strengthened to storm status, becoming Tropical Storm Alvin. Early on it looked like TS Alvin would continue to steadily intensify and possibly hit hurricane force. The Log The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded the California Department of Toxic Substances Control a $96,000 grant to test a wide variety of safer non-biocide alternatives to copper-based antifouling boat paint. http://vimeo.com/68027581 Near shore conditions being what they were, we went to Catalina instead. Or darn!! Ship Rock and Eagle Reef. Flat, calm, kinda clear, no sun. I spent my time trying out my new PolarPro Magenta Fiter for the GoPro. It color corrects for green water. I purchased this. I give it a thumbs up. But, the design needs some work. The retainer tab broke off after ONE dive. And, I lost it. In no surge, or current. :-( Secondly, I was surprised to see all the abalone. They seemed to be hungry, and I'm a sucker for a hungry abalone. So I fed them their favorite dish, kelp. If you try this, be sure to offer it up at the correct end of the shell. Or else the take offense. You don't want a pissed off abalone. Various abalone prefer different types of kelp. Look around and pick the cleanest and tenderest bit of kelp you see in...

Desal plant moves closer to Coastal Commission hearing

By Anthony Clark Carpio - Huntington Beach Independent Poseidon Resources' desalination plant application is one step closer to being approved after a state agency deemed it complete, officials said. The Stamford, Conn.-based company's application was completed June 6. Poseidon is looking at an October or November hearing before the California Coastal Commission. Though the application is in the pipeline, commission staff waived necessary information to make the document sufficient for filing. Does anyone find it surprising that a sailboat carrying 80 to 90 bales of marijuana was beached in Newport Harbor after a brief chase by the Coast Guard? This occurred at 1 a.m. on June 3 after the drug smugglers entered the harbor and refused to allow the Coast Guard personnel to board the sailboat. Finally, the boat was run aground on Balboa Island, and two people leapt from the vessel only to disappear in the night. Continue Reading......
