LB Commission Recommends Slip Fee Increases

The Log: by Ambrosia Brody LONG BEACH -- Boat slip tenants in Long Beach marinas may get a rent hike, if the Long Beach City Council approves a Marine Advisory Commission recommendation to raise slip fees by .5 percent for boaters using older wooden docks and by 2.224 percent for boaters using concrete docks. The 2.224 percent increase corresponds to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Commissioners voted several times on five options provided by Marine Bureau manager Mark Sandoval during a May 9 meeting. The advisory group pondered how to ensure that the marina maintains adequate funding for future upgrades while not imposing too big of an increase on local boaters. Continue Reading......

Dock Owners Drop Request for Restraining Order

The Log By: Ambrosia Brody NEWPORT BEACH -- The Newport Beach Dock Owners Association -- a group of citizens and business owners behind the Stop the Dock Tax campaign, who filed a lawsuit against the city of Newport Beach on Feb. 12 -- withdrew its request for a temporary restraining order that was intended to prevent the city from collecting permit fees on private docks from tidelands users on April 24, officials report. Ensenada Race Boat Grounding Reveals Nav Hazard

The Log By: Ambrosia Brody PUERTO SALINA, BAJA CALIFORNIA NORTE -- One sailboat participating in this year’s Newport-to-Ensenada Race was nearly destroyed when an attempt to cruise into a marina north of Ensenada resulted in a grounding at a shoal-filled and virtually landlocked facility. The incident revealed a serious but little-known navigation hazard for boaters along Northern Baja California’s Pacific Coast. Puerto Salina marina tenants have reported that boat groundings are commonplace in this area, since dredging operations at the entrance channel have been stalled for almost half a year. 40th Newport Boat Show Coming April 18-21

The Log NEWPORT BEACH -- A lot has happened since the very first Newport Boat Show opened at Lido Marina Village in 1973. Back then, Richard Nixon was in the White House. A Middle East oil embargo had brought on a U.S. gasoline shortage and there were long lines at filling stations. “All in the Family” was the Number 1 television show in the country.
